We all know them, the people who are admired among masses, turn heads and seem to sparkle like fictional vampires in sunlight. They are always surrounded by events and through small-town rumor mills knowledge of their whereabouts and happenings spread. Sometimes also false ones created by wannabes.
It seems all of these people have three things in common.
Ever thought about what values you have? It is the very foundation of who we are yet it is rare to stop and think about this. To have a moral code and go by that does not only create clarity for yourself but also for your peers. Figure out what you stand for and never sacrifice your principles. Respect will follow.
This is often in combination with standing up for your beliefs.
"IT" people did not get where the are by floating with the stream and beeing afraid what others think. Speaking up shows you know who you are. When you get attention, courage is an IT attribute needed to not get run over. The fishes that swim in their own current are more easily spotted by sharks. Make sure you are brave enough to face them.
Care about others
After Nelson Mandela died I met a person who had spoken to him once. He explained to me how when he shook his hand and looked into his eyes he felt like he had know him his whole life. My theory is that since IT people already are sure of themselves they do not seek validation from you. They put all their energy in that moment and truly see you. Now who are you most likely to share your best qualities with, someone who gets you or a stranger? In this case it can be both.
Everyone has potential to be whatever they want and to be the hero of the story called our life. It doesn´t hurt to be seen as one, so what are you waiting for, go get IT!
Whether it´s a day job or a learning experience inbetween dream jobs, the traditional way of getting hired by leaving a resume is long gone. Here are some well thoughtout and tested tips to land the gig without wasting your time
Start Doing It
To simply walk into a bar, grab a plate and start clearing tables is crazy effective if you want to be a waitress. Show that you do not wait around for someone to tell you what to do. You seem helpful and active plus your now future employer can easily picture you working there. Worst case scenario you´ll have a fun time seeing how they react. Your own social project if you will.
Spread The Word
Letting people know you are looking for a job is a great way to get recommended. Bring it up and ask for other´s thoughts and tips and suddenly they are invested in getting you there. And no you are not pushy , there is nothing wrong with looking for a job. The opposite (not looking) is worse.
Be An Intern
If you are only in it for the money you are not only doing yourself a huge missfavor but you´re also not doing the best you can. Interning is a great way to try out a profession, get hands-on knowledge and a lot of opportunities. This is also one of the most common routes to getting hired, showing an interest is vital.
Represent Your Own Brand
Know what you want and do not fear to ask for it. The assingments you take on should be aligned with your values. If something is immoral or doesn´t feel right , do not do it! Respect yourself and your time and others will too.
Ever wondered how successful people know all these people? Unfortunately contacts do not just appear. The secret is attending a lot of events, half of the job is just showing up. There are millions of interesting folks out there who want to get to know you. Something I've learned is that self-improvement is a worthwile investment and since the person I´ll spend the most amount of time with in my lifetime is myself, I try to do these things .
In such a loud world it is easy to want to shut off. So you plug in your earphones to disappear into your own world. Meanwhile across you on the subway sits an old man who once wrestled a shark with his bare hands wanting someone to talk to.. There are interesting people everywhere and everyone, yes, EVERYONE , you meet knows something that you don't. Does that make you sceptic? Put the theory to the test. Go ask a stranger to tell you about their lives and what they´ve learnt. People tend to like beeing listen to so really tune in to hear the story behind the words. Simply stay quiet and mysterios while gaining knowledge and friendships. You'll be suprised by the respons.
Not to be mistaken with beeing self involved, this is where you dare to find your flaws, dusting of those skeletons in your closet to see what you find. Write journals and analyse how you react in certain situations. This is scary territory necessary to enter in order to evolve.
Back in the day we used to categorize nomads as unfortunate, but now a days lots of people long to live like this. To go from place to place and always see new things widens your horizons. Travelers are often less judgmental than non-travelers, as they have faced a wide range of cultures and traditions. It´s a quality we should all strive for.
When trying to learn it´s easy to get stuck watching 20 videos on how to do it only to feel you have to read three books before acually starting. This is a waste of time. Learn enough to selfcorrect and do it by trial and error. Otherwise it counts as procastination. Do you want to learn how to speak with people, do it. Do you want to speak a new language, speak it.
Throwing yourself into the unknown blue might feel scary but it will make you learn how to swim real fast. Oh and do not forget your lifejacket, aka your self-belief.
