I am constantly writing on something, whether it is a blog post, novel or travel memoirs. So in order to help out my fellow writers, I decided to list my favorite places to get things done and what you should keep an eye out for while you´re there. Enjoy!
Do not underestimate the most romanticized waterhole of writers. There is an endless variation on offer for every mood. It also gets you out of the house and provides a feeling of actually doing something productive. The hustle and bustle of people around you is the perfect character inspiration. How do fifteen year old boys really talk these days? Eavesdrop to the group sitting next to you. Need to describe a business suit in detail? Sneak a peek at the stressed woman at the till ordering a take away coffee. An extra plus for the fact that cafés exist in most countries which is perfect for the avid traveler.
If you prefer peace and quiet while writing, well then this is obviously the place for you. It is also refreshing somehow looking around and seeing the amount of crazy-people-who-thought-they-could-write-a-book and actually succeeded. Maybe it is not as far-fetched as it seems while you are sitting there pulling your hair in frustration over character development. Nowhere else makes you as aware of the importance of marketing either. Your great book can easily disappear in a sea of others. An extra plus for the fact that most libraries offer free Wi-Fi.
Hipster pubs are definitely to prefer. Here you will be appreciated and respected for being a corner poet rather than mocked as a no-friends wallflower. The bartender will be happy as it will create an atmosphere of mystery for the other guests. Although I do not encourage anyone to overconsume alcohol, there is something about having a glass or two when you are feeling utterly stuck. People here also behave in a different way than what you would find during the day, aiding you in your quest to describe the full human spectra of emotions. Doesn´t it give you goosebumps, thinking of all the masterpieces that have been created in such an establishment?
Bring your own picnic and find a secret hide-out for people watching or perhaps a secluded spot for nature observing. Hopefully there will be a park in your neighborhood offering both. On the downside you are completely at the mercy of the elements. A native of Sweden I have been known to don gloves and scarfs to be able to write outside for a few more weeks. In my new hometown of Barcelona, shade and water is the way to go. With a little bit of preparation you are in the perfect location to observe child parent interaction, young love and a little bit of wild life. If you need to work on descriptive details, this is the place to do it.
This suggestion is more radical than the others and of course requires more preparations, but for those lucky enough to have some time off a writer´s retreat can really kick start that idea you have been carrying around for years. The beauty of house sitting is that there won´t be any accommodation costs at all. Furthermore you will often have a whole house to yourself and if you choose to stay in the country side there won´t be much to distract you but beautiful nature walks and we do all need those, don´t we? There are several websites for this depending on what kind of house you are after and how much work you´re willing to put in. (watering plants, walking dogs) A budget flight or train and it won´t be more expensive than if you had stayed at home.
